How to Take Care of Yourself

Caring for a child in the hospital is an important job. As your child’s advocate and support person, you are there every step of the way in order to take charge of your child’s care. Over time, you may find yourself becoming worn out, tired or stressed. Try these tips to keep yourself healthy and on top of your child’s care:

  • Take breaks for yourself. Step away from your child’s hospital room and find a quiet place to relax for an hour. You may want to exercise to help boost your energy levels. Every Tuesday our holistic team provide chair massages and Reiki for parents and caregivers in Room 228. Please call 516-470-3169 for an appointment.
  • Eat healthy. If you are eating from the cafeteria, choose fruits, vegetables and healthy proteins. This will keep your body energized. Try to keep healthy snacks on hand, like nuts and granola bars.
  • Keep information organized. Have a notebook or folder where you keep all of your child’s hospital information. Keep your notebook with you—that way, you can jot down questions for the doctor or nurse as you think of them.
  • Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Caring for a child in the hospital takes a lot of energy. Your team of support people wants to help you, whether you need laundry done or a friend to talk to.
  • Work with a child life specialist. These staff members help you with the emotional parts of a hospital stay, like being away from home or watching your child go through a tough procedure. They also can stay at your child’s bedside if you need to get some rest, run an errand or just need time to yourself.

Aidan’s Starfish Lounge

At Aidan’s Starfish Lounge, formerly the Family Resource Center, our concierge team guides families and caregivers to services in and around the hospital. Caregivers can charge their phones, set up their mobile devices, print out documents, retreat to read a book, relax and enjoy our fish tank.
